OpenBound
Privacy Policy
Last updated September 16, 2026
OpenBound Journey helps you plan outdoor adventures. This policy explains what we collect, why, and the choices you have. Questions? Email hello@openboundjourney.com.
What we collect
Account details. Your email address and, if you sign in with Google, Apple or Microsoft, your name and profile photo from that provider. We never receive your password for those accounts.
What you create. Trips, itineraries, packing and gear lists, meals, to-dos, saved ideas, bucket-list items, photos you upload, and messages you send to other members.
Invitations. When you invite someone to a trip, the email address, phone number or handle you enter, so we can deliver the invitation.
Device and usage information. Basic logs such as pages viewed and errors, used to keep the app working and fast.
Location. Destinations and place names you type in as you search and plan. If you choose to allow it, the app can also use your phone's location to show trails, campgrounds and other places near you — this is optional and only happens when the app is open. You can turn location access off at any time in your phone's settings, and we never track your location in the background.
How we use it
To create and secure your account, save and sync your plans across your devices, build itineraries and suggestions from what you tell us, show weather, trail, campground and permit information for the places you plan to visit, send trip invitations and account emails, and improve reliability and performance.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not run third-party ad tracking.
Who we share it with
People you invite. Collaborators on a trip can see that trip, and members you message can see your handle, name and photo.
Service providers. Hosting and database, email delivery, text-message delivery, and mapping, weather, trail, campground and permit data sources — including the National Weather Service, National Park Service, Recreation.gov, OpenStreetMap and Wikimedia. Planning features send the trip details you provide to a planning service to generate suggestions.
Legal reasons. If required by law, or to protect the safety and rights of our members.
Text messages
We only text someone when a member invites them to a trip and confirms that person asked for the invitation. We store that confirmation — the number, who sent it, the wording agreed to and the time — as our record of permission. Every text names OpenBound Journey, says message and data rates may apply, and explains how to stop. Replying STOP opts a number out immediately and permanently until the person replies START; replying HELP returns our contact details. Phone numbers are used only to deliver invitations and honour opt-outs, and are never sold or used for marketing. Full details are in our Text Message Policy.
Your choices
Edit or delete your trips, gear, meals and saved items at any time. From your profile you can sign out and erase everything stored on that device, or ask us to delete your account and its data by emailing hello@openboundjourney.com. You can plan and explore without an account; in that case your plans stay on your device until you choose to save them.
Keeping information safe
Data is stored with encrypted connections and access rules that limit each account to its own information. No service can promise perfect security, so please use a strong, unique password.
Children
OpenBound Journey is for adults: accounts are limited to people 18 and older, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If we learn that an account belongs to someone under 18, we delete it and the information attached to it. You may add children as travelers on a trip — please keep that to first names only.
Changes
If this policy changes in a meaningful way, we'll update the date above and let you know in the app.
