Terms of Service

Last updated September 16, 2026

These terms are the agreement between you and OpenBound for using OpenBound Journey. By using the app you accept them. If you don't agree, please don't use the app.

Your account

You need an account to save plans, message members and collaborate on trips. Keep your sign-in details private, give accurate information, and let us know at hello@openboundjourney.com if someone else uses your account. Accounts are for adults: you must be 18 or older to create one and to agree to these terms. Children can be listed as travelers on a trip by an adult, but they can't have their own account.

Plans, memberships and payments

Some features are free and some are included with a membership. Prices, what's included and any free allowance are shown in the app before you commit. Memberships renew until you cancel, and cancelling stops future charges — it doesn't refund past ones unless the law requires it. We may change pricing or what's included, with notice in the app.

What you create and share

Your trips, photos, recipes and messages stay yours. By posting them you give us permission to store and display them so the app works — for example showing your trip to people you invite, or your recipe to the community if you share it. You're responsible for having the right to share what you post.

Rules of the road

Don't post unlawful, hateful, harassing, deceptive or privacy-invading content; don't impersonate anyone; don't scrape, copy or resell the app or its data; don't try to break security or access other members' information; and don't use the app to send spam. We may remove content or suspend accounts that break these rules.

Outdoor safety — please read

Trip suggestions, routes, driving times, weather, trail and water information, packing lists, permit details and campground availability are planning aids, not guarantees. Conditions change quickly and data sources can be out of date or wrong. Always check official sources, land manager rules and current closures, carry appropriate gear, and make your own judgment about what is safe for your group. You are responsible for your own safety and for the people you travel with.

Outdoor activities — hiking, backpacking, paddling, packrafting, fishing, driving remote roads, camping and everything like them — carry real risks of injury, illness, property loss and death. You travel at your own risk. By using OpenBound Journey you accept those risks for yourself and anyone in your party, including children and pets, and you agree that OpenBound is not responsible for what happens on your trip. Nothing here is professional guiding, medical, or search-and-rescue advice. Make sure you carry insurance, leave your plans with someone, and turn back when conditions call for it.

If you use the app to plan with other people, you are responsible for the trip you invite them to. Anyone joining is responsible for their own decisions and preparation.

Text messages and invitations

You may invite people to a trip by email, phone number or handle. Before we send a text on your behalf you must confirm that the person asked you to invite them; we record that confirmation with the number, the wording and the time. Only invite people who have agreed — don't use invitations for marketing, bulk sending or anyone who hasn't asked to hear from you. Accounts that send unwanted messages may be suspended.

Every text we send identifies OpenBound Journey, notes that message and data rates may apply, and offers opt-out. Anyone can reply STOP to stop all future texts, or HELP for our contact details; STOP applies to that phone number across the whole app, so an opted-out number cannot be invited by text again until the person replies START. Our Text Message Policy explains this in full.

Third-party information and links

The app shows information from outside sources such as public land agencies, weather services, map providers and community members. We don't control that information and don't warrant its accuracy or availability. Permits, reservations and licenses are purchased from the responsible agency under its own terms.

Availability and changes

This is an evolving product. Features may change, pause or be removed, and the app may be unavailable at times. We may update these terms; if the changes are meaningful we'll update the date above and let you know in the app.

No warranties and limits

The app is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind, to the fullest extent the law allows. To the extent permitted by law, OpenBound is not liable for indirect or consequential losses, and our total liability is limited to the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim.

Ending your use

You can stop using the app and ask us to delete your account at any time. We may suspend or close accounts that break these terms or create risk for other members.
